Downtown Halifax is a veritable playground for dogs and their humans during the warmer months – with dozens of dog-friendly patios to choose from. Each pub, restaurant, or beer garden has something different to offer, so we hit up five very different patios with our favourite pup, Roscoe, who was more than happy to oblige. Here’s a rundown of the pints poured, snacks eaten, and the patio vibes in general.

Garrison Brewing, 1149 Marginal Road

Garrison Brewing

One of the OG breweries in the city, and stalwart of the Halifax Seaport, Garrison Brewing has recently made some big changes both inside and outside. Interior renovations have opened up the space, moving the bar to a central location, and added a new retail shipping container fridge. They’ve increased patio seating by 60 seats with a wrap-around patio (taking over the former Tomavino’s pizza space).

Both the patio and inside the brewery remain dog-friendly, and what better place to order a flight of various beers? Ours included Tall Ship, Lil’ Juicy Hazy IPA, Raspberry Wheat, Hold Fast dry-hopped pale ale, and Mango and Dragonfruit Sour – a stellar lineup on a hot day.

For Roscoe: a homemade dog treat made by Malty Dog with 100% spent grain from Garrison Brewing, available for purchase at the bar, and some fresh water. Garrison also offers Crafty Beasts Fetch Pale Ale (a locally-made dog “beer”).

Additionally, we had picked up some treats earlier at the nearby Seaport Farmers Market – dehydrated sardines from Green Paw Pet Treats – which Roscoe loves.

We stuck with beer on this stop, but you can bring in your own food at Garrison. (If the Seaport Market isn’t open for snacks, the new Tomavino’s location is just across the way!) This patio is great for people-watching, relaxing, and maybe even chatting up your neighbours. Roscoe made some friends during this stop – both dogs and humans.

The Brown Hound, 1450 Ironstone Lane

The Brown Hound Ironstone Lane

A dog-themed pub with a dog-friendly patio? It only makes sense. This outdoor space may be one of downtown Halifax’s best-kept secrets, located in a semi-hidden flagstone courtyard just off Lower Water Street, behind The Alexander condo building and near the historic Keith’s Brewery. Its urban charm is akin to a U.K.-style pub, and the string lights create a dreamy, glowing ambiance after the sun goes down.

For Roscoe, there were water bowls on site, but he was more interested in what the humans ordered – the Brown Hound’s excellent chicken wings (sadly, they weren’t for him). Big Spruce It Takes Two to Tango Sour, an excellent patio beer, was poured to help beat the heat. This pub has a rotating selection of local ciders, and on this day it was a lovely Elderflower Cider by Island Folk.

The BG, Summit Plaza, Halifax Waterfront

The BG

One of the top dog-friendly destinations on the waterfront consistently delivers on both people and adorable pup-watching, with the lovely coastal backdrop of the Halifax Harbour. There’s always something to look at, whether it’s tourists taking off on jet skis, the Harbour Hopper floating on by, or one of the many festivals that happen on the harbourfront.

Dogs are permitted on the ground level only, with water bowls on offer, and sometimes dog beer by Crafty Beasts is for sale at the bar (spoiler: it’s bone broth). Customers are also allowed to grab a pup cup by nearby Sweet ‘n’ Salty Soft Serve and bring it into the BG, as the two share ownership.

We stopped in with Roscoe and found a shady spot at a picnic table, grabbing him some water right away, plus ordering pints of Lake City Cider and Nine Locks Dirty Blonde. Snacks at the beer garden included one of the loaded “dogs” on offer – the nacho dog, which comes topped with guacamole, feta, corn, black beans, pickled red onion, crema, and tortilla chips. It was certainly a delicious mouthful, served with fries. We also got the buffalo chicken bites, which, with that drizzle of cool ranch aioli, always hit just right with a cold pint.

Stone’s Throw Patio, 1919 Upper Water Street

Stone’s Throw Patio at the Marriott Harbourfront Hotel

You might be familiar with Harbourstone, the restaurant located in the lobby of the Marriott Harbourfront Hotel, which is at the north end of the boardwalk, but did you know they have an expansive patio right on the water? Stone’s Throw is a peaceful space with water views, perfect for watching the boats go by with your pup – and also for starting a stroll of the boardwalk.

The seafood-driven menu has a huge focus on local ingredients and is fitting for a hot summer day by the water. We noshed on the fried calamari with pickled cucumber, nuoc cham, furikake, and sriracha citrus aioli. The summer hummus bowl featured preserved lemon hummus, smashed cucumber, red pepper, kalamata olive, and feta served with grilled pita, which was perfect for sharing. We also indulged in the seafood tagliatelle, which was topped with mussels, clams, and shrimp, in a sauce Américaine with cured egg yolk. Several of the appetizers at Stone’s Throw are available for only $15 during “Appy Hour” from 4-6 pm daily.

For drinks, we tried the classic Caesar, a pint of Good Robot Diablo (a summery jalapeño lager), and Moonrise Ridge fresh strawberry cider. Roscoe relaxed on the soft seating, plus stayed cool with some fresh water.

LevelBar, 1725 Market Street

LevelBar at The Prince George Hotel

Many Haligonians aren’t aware that LevelBar at the Prince George Hotel has a sprawling courtyard patio with plenty of greenery (actually, it has two!). Located through the back doors near the lobby bar, you have a choice of soft couches and chairs, some with fire tables, or high tables with stools. It’s a quiet retreat in the downtown core that’s perfect for groups, or just you and your pup. No worries about walking your doggo through the lobby to reach the space – this is a dog-friendly hotel.

The Happy Hour specials are tough to beat, offered from 4:30-6:30 pm with deals on both appetizers and drinks. We grabbed a pint of Propeller Pilsner for only $6, plus a fancied-up can of Lake City Cider poured over ice, garnished with fresh apple and mint for $8. For snacks, we dug into the noir-ancini (a fun take on arancini), a crispy fried ball of black glutinous rice, stuffed with fontina cheese, served in a green curry sauce. The compressed watermelon, cucumber, and marinated feta skewers with hot honey, sumac cheese, and crispy shallots were a summery delight on this humid afternoon.

We also tried the beet and grain salad featuring roasted and pickled beets, toasted farro, sourdough croutons, and a sous vide egg, with gazpacho dressing (this dish is not on the happy hour menu). Other happy hour appies that are highly recommended, based on previous visits, include the mussels and fries, gambas shrimp, and nachos.

There’s still time left for a patio crawl!

Whether you’re looking for a quieter space with upscale appetizers, a stop at a bustling beer garden to take in the action, or to discover a new-to-you patio in Downtown Halifax, chances are your pup can tag along.
